ONBOARD vs OFFBOARD, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Short answer: the motor location…

Onboard motors are integrated within the rangehood unit with the motor and fan built internally. The ducting is fitted to the motor outlet and is run to the external atmosphere.

Offboard motors are placed away from the rangehood unit; outside the home on the roof, eave or wall, in the ceiling cavity or beneath the floor, and are fitted with a 7-metre power cable back to the hood. Ducting is then fitted between the hood, motor and then atmosphere.

Why Choose Offboard?

With offboard motors, you have the option of choosing the type of motor you need and where it’s placed; out of the kitchen itself. Offboard motors are powerful, providing great air movement to remove smoke, steam, grease and odours. But one of the biggest factors for home is the sound volume.

As offboard motors are external, they are fixed away from the kitchen, meaning the noise a motor creates is transferred away from the room, outdoors, in the ceiling or under the floor.

Another benefit of offboard motors is they use moderate power while performing powerful extraction. Offboard motors pull the air from the rangehood while onboards push it; it’s easier for a motor to pull than push as pushing is going against gravity meaning the motor needs to work harder. This is why offboard motors generally have a lower air movement than onboard options.

Why Choose Onboard?

Onboard hoods have many benefits. For one, they're much easier to install with no need to find a suitable location for the motor, or additional ducting, therefore, there’s generally lower installation costs.

Sirius have heavily invested and developed the standard onboard motor used, now boasting super energy efficiency (up to AA+ energy ratings in the EU) and have developed a fan design to increase airflow using less RPM’s which creates less noise; the traditional down fall of the onboard motor option. Some models even a feature noise reduction function for use when entertaining. The onboards come in single, twin or triple motor options – to suit any kitchen application.

Why are Sirius Motors So Good?

We've partnered with the best European motor manufacturers to create the ultimate range of on and off board motors that provide the maximum in performance, specifically designed for the Australian home, with a strong focus on noise quality.

Our Green Energy Motors are designed to offer significant energy savings without compromising on performance, no matter the type of motor you choose. They offer exceptional power and airflow, operate at optimum levels but without the additional power costs, and reducing noise.

So, when choosing a Sirius rangehood, whether it be onboard or offboard, you’re getting a superior motor that offers powerful air movement, advanced energy efficiency, and reduced sound levels so you can still carry a conversation while you cook, without needing to shout.
